Newberys and Caldecotts

I, too, haven't received any postings from CCBC which means one thing - we all better start writing. I have been busy scurrying around, getting my hands on all the Newbery and Caldecott books, elbowing all the interested adults in the area for them, arm-wrestling with Dr. Ron Green for the first copy of Belle Prater's Boy, etc. (Ron took me down two pins to one!) I loved Belle Prater's Boy! It struck me in that big ole soft spot sitting near the spine ( I definitely have to read Katie Horning's new book on criticism!!)I loved the characters, their jokes and hurts, and found the ending very satisfying. It was one of the few books in which I turned around and read it a second time immediately after the first reading. I also enjoyed A Girl Named Disaster. I was glad these two books made at least Honor status. I didn't enjoy View From Saturday as much, but appreciated Konigsburg's strong writing style. I never got the sense that the kids were talking like kids, though. As far as the Caldecotts go, well, I never understand why some art is selected over other types. I didn't feel any strong feelings about any of the winners. I still can't figure out why Pinkney hasn't one the big one, or Moser. But then again, the winner of our local art show was a big blob (her painting was a big blob, she wasn't a big blob), while all the "good" stuff was runner up. I know, I know...So get posting folks! CCBC's pretty important to a lot of us, and when the postings DO come through, they always make for great reading.
