This is in response to Susan Stan's question about why there were no Batchelder Award honor books this year.
For the past few years the Batchelder Award Committee has had the option of naming honor books. They also have the option of not naming honor books.
(Actually they even have the option of not awarding anything at all, if they feel nothing is particularly outstanding, unlike the Newbery and Caldecott Award Committess which are required to award their medals.)
The 1997 Batchelder Committee chose not to name any honor books simply because we recognized that "The Friends" was in a class by itself and stood head and shoulders above any of the other eligible books. In fact, as Susan Stan remarked, "The Friends" was one of the best children's books published in the U.S. in 1996.
