Many CCBC-Net subscribers have just returned from the Midwinter conference of the American Library Association in Washington D.C. Much of the work of this professional organization is accomplished by committees who meet at the Midwinter conference. This includes the intensive discussions and the final decisions of the various awards committees that fall under the auspices of the ALA. These awards are:

The John Newbery Award (for distinguished writing in book for children) The Randolph Caldecott Medal (for distinguished illustration in a book for children) The Mildred L. Batchelder Award (for outstanding translated book)

The above-listed are chosen by committees that are part of the Association of Library Services to Children (ALSC). In addition, other ALA children's book awards fall under the auspices of the Social Responsiblities Round Table (SRRT). These are:

The Coretta Scott King Award (recognizes African-American authors and artists for outstanding writing and illustration on children's books) The Genesis Award (also awarded by the Coretta Scott King Award Task Force, this recognizes promise in a newly published African-American author or illustrator).

Megan Schliesman arranged to have the news of the 1997 award winners sent out to CCBC-Net subscribers soon after the news was announced on Monday Feb 17. At this time we invite subscribers to comment on any of the books that were awarded. We'll continue this discussion over the next few weeks. If you have questions about the process committees use to select the award winners, this would be a good time to ask, since a number of CCBC-Net subscribers have served as members of past or present award committees. All work of the committees is confidential, so they can't give you information on specific titles, but they are free to comment on the terms of the award and how the committees work. They can also comment specifically on what the committee appreciated about a specific winner or honor book.

Since there are a large number of titles on our discussion roster, let's try to make the discussion more manageable by starting off with a discussion of the books that were honored by the 1997 Caldecott Medal Committee. To refresh you memories, these are:

Winner:
"Golem," by David Wisniewski (Clarion)

Honor Books:
"The Graphic Alphabet," by David Pelletier (Orchard)
"Hush: A Thai Lullaby," illus. by Holly Meade, written by Minfong Ho
(Melanie Kroupa/Orchard)
"The Paperboy," by Dav Pilkey (Richard Jackson/Orchard)
"Starry Messenger," by Peter Sis (Frances Foster/Farrar)

Do any of you have any responses to the books listed above? Or questions about how the Caldecott Committee works? Now is the time to speak up!
