I just returned from the 3rd day of a writing residency and, with its being Valentine's Day, of course I needed to do something with love poems
(I focus on having kids write non-rhyming poetry about their lives and, while doing so, look at some of the bits of advice writers often get
[show, don't tell] and what those things mean and how to do them). I used a new book, LOVE LETTERS by Arnold Adoff with witty illustrations by Lisa Desimini. These 7th, 8th, and 11th graders responded really well--both to the reading and then to using the poems to inspire their own writing. The wry touches amused and interested them. I recommend it
