Jane,
I thoroughly agree with your idea of having students read or shall we say reread "The Giver" for more in depth discussion. There are so many great books that are newer for students to read but the old stand bys are still the ones of choice for most classes. Perhaps educating the adults in such things as book discussions would help create a broader acceptance of the newer books.
