Since Ginny said I didn't have to be profound, I thought that I would say something about my own reaction to The Giver. I found the book virtually awe-inspiring in its depiction of an alternative reality. I could not put it down, but found myself reading more and more slowly to make it last longer. I was one of those many people who wrote to Lois Lowry; in my case it was to congratulate her on such a masterpiece. It is one of those books that I recommend to people of all ages. I have forced my mother and husband to read it and then in turn forced them to discuss it with me. I have also successfully booktalked it to teens and had the copies vanish off of the shelves. (Of course booktalking is much easier if you feel passionate about the book!)
I read Number the Stars years ago, but have not reread it since Holocaust stories seem to really bother me ever since I visited a concentration camp in Germany. Sorry that I do not remember enough to compare the two, but I have enjoyed Lois Lowry's writing all along and look forward to reading more.

"A house without books is like a room without windows. No man has a right
to bring up children without surrounding them with books...Children learn
to read being in the prescence of books."
