Thanks everyone, for your great comments on poetry. Alexa of Boston reminded me that I, too, loved Robert Louis Stevenson's poems, and even though some of them would probably be rather politically incorrect today, I don't think their ethnocentricity tarnished me too much. I loved "The Swing" and "The Counterpane" -- and those two still evoke warm remembrances of Home for me -- as well as "Foreign Children." For today, Valentine's Day, (especially if I were still in my Ohio school library), I'd probably choose Eloise Greenfield's Honey I Love, which was one of my favorite books to use, and I guess I used it often enough that I had most of the poems memorized. The children just loved the sounds, smells and tastes of those words! When my own children were young ( a long time ago!) we sang and recited lots of songs and poems of Pooh. And they stayed with us...and came to mind as we ate "Rice Pudding", or saw "Buckingham Palace", etc. What fun!
Jane mentioned that there's a small market for poetry; yes, we surely must provide the "link" between kids and poetry! Share it every day; it
"teaches" itself!
