Personal Picks

I have been enjoying the comments posted on this listserv for about a year and feel it is probably time I add some of my own. First, I should introduce myself. I am a public school librarian at a EC-2 school in the Verona School District. This is my first year out of library school and my 7th year in education.

I participated in the Coretta Scott King (ill.) and Caldecott discussions at the CCBC not too long ago and the books I have chosen as my "personal picks" for winners this year come from the lists the CCBC distributed. GOLEM was not one I read, so I can not comment on it. I did have some winners in mind that my students felt strongly about. Our choices would be as follows:

Kindergarten -- would have given an award to THE RING by Lisa Maizlish as well as to GOOSE by Molly Bang.

1st grade -- most definately would have awarded SAM AND THE TIGERS by Julius Lester (Jerry Pinkney, ill.) a first prize for text and pictures, followed closely by LILLY'S PURPLE PLASTIC PURSE by Kevin Henkes.

2nd grade -- absolutely loved THE PAPERBOY by Dav Pilkey and were very excited to hear it had received a Caldecott Honor. I believe BILL PICKETT by Andrea and Brian Pinkney would have been their second choice.

I like books that work well with kids, so their favorites are my favorites. I did have a choice all my own for the Newbery. In my opinion, JIP: HIS STORY by Katherine Paterson was simply fantastic. It was very exciting, introduced many interesting and controversial topics, and I really cared about the characters. I wish it would have received something. I also enjoyed THE VIEW FROM SATURDAY very much and think it will have wide appeal with kids.

I would love to hear other opinions on these books that were perhaps considered by the committee but not chosen. Is there some way to find out if this is the case?
