I am a public librarian in Silver Spring, MD and have been lurking for some time. It's curious to me that people have been slow to respond to the call to comment on the new Caldecott winner and honor books. I have to admit that I felt some surprise and disappointment on the top award to Golem. You have to admire the craft and power that went into the art of the book, but I have trouble taking in the degree of detail of illustration in the covers of a book. I have also had trouble with Wisniewski's color palette. On the other hand, I find Hush to be a little masterpiece, perfect fit of lllustrations to text and with much true child appeal. As to the process of a committee choosing the awards, when there are quite a few honor books named, does that mean there has been a fair degree of disagreement? I hope this is not too negative a tone on which to begin discussion!!! Judy Furash, Wheaton Regional Library. jfurash at capaccess.org
