Two comments re: the 1997 Caldecotts move me to respond:
a few honor books named, does that mean there has been a fair degree of disagreement?
There are a number of ways to choose honor books: the committee can decide to give honor citations to books with the second, third, fourth, etc. number of points; the committee can decide to hold an entirely separate vote for honor books and look for a natural cluster- a certain number of books hovering around the same number of points; they can have a separate vote for each book, depending on the number decided upon. Whatever decision is made, it is made by the committee as part of the group process, and must be decided upon before any voting takes place. So, no,
"quite a few" honor books doesn't mean there was a fair degree of disagreement. It means there was actually a fair degree of *agreement* in terms of the vote and the process.
emotional power?
You bet.
