I am Kathy Prestidge, Children's Librarian at New London Public Library, New London Wisconsin. When I first worked as a Children's Librarian in the 70's, I remember one disastrous storytime when I tried to use poetry with preschoolers. My selections and presentation were not age-appropriate which the children communicated to me very directly--they simply got up and walked out. I have learned a little since then, but I usually stayed with the finger play ditties in storytime. This discussion reminds me that I need to stretch a little in using poetry with children.
I do enjoy using the picture book Color: A Poem by Rossetti and other illustrated poems. I have also discovered a new book: Small Talk: A Book of Short Poems selected by Lee Bennett Hopkins. It is a collection of pithy poems on subjects familiar to small children, but I think it would also work to demonstrate the power of poetic brevity and precision to older children and young adults. When the book arrrived, I found the poems so delightful that a I walked around the library reading selections to any available coworker.
