We have a young readers' book discussion group at our library, and I was interested in the reactions of the kids (ages 9) to "The Giver." Though they understood the reasons behind the "safe" society, they were all thoroughly convinced that freedom of choice was worth the cost. Adults I've talked to seem more inclined to agree, but with reservations; they often feel obliged to point out some of the benefits of the safer world. I take the kids' reaction as an encouraging sign of optimism. Also, we always discuss what other titles the book we're discussing reminds us of, and this was the only time none of the kids (all very well read) could up with something comparable. Another compliment to a unique book.
