What a wonderful note, Ginny! Poetry every day, indeed, indeed!! I can't let the month go by (and I'm on my way to ALA tomorrow!) without sending my two cents worth about poetry. It's almost a command performance because the Milwaukee Public Library produced a "Poetry Concert" for ten years in the late 80s and early 90s!! We worked with children and the poets themselves. We had the privilege of watching Eve Merriam, Lillian Morrison, Karla Kuskin, Ashley Bryan, Nancy Willard, Arnold Adoff and many other work with children and perform their own poetry on stage. You can read about it in the School Library Journal for June, 1987, so I won't go on. But I assure you that many people looked at me in a different way when we had Paul Fleischman---and he won the award for the very book he used when he was here the spring before he won the Newbery!!!
I have two books that I use with teachers and families who want to use poetry but don't know how to begin, so I'll limit myself to them. KNOCK AT A STAR: A CHILD'S INTRODUCTION TO POETRY by X. J. Kennedy not only has a lovely selection of poems, but groups them in a manner that is accessible to everyone. It is in both paper and hardback and is a joy to use. The next one is a new title this year and is edited by Bernice E. Cullinan. It is called A JAR OF TINY STARS: POEMS BY NCTE AWARD-WINNING POETS. This title groups poems according to the author with a quote from each. At the back is a short biography of each of the poets. The poems were selected by the children themselves. Both of these books have very attractive formats and would be a joy to use for poetry every day.
I think we are very fortunate to have editors in children's publishing who produce such beautiful books of poetry suitable for every age. I remember George Nicholson saying that editors depend on adults to use poetry for children, because there is such a small market unless poetry is introduced to children.
