Many thanks to Therese Bigelow, past president of the ALA Association for Library Service to Children, who sent the following message from Kansas City Public Library (THERESE at KCPL.LIB.MO.US):

"The question was also asked about how they [the Newbery and Caldecott medals] looked and were presented. I had the pleasure of actually seeing and touching both medals last year as ALSC President. The medals come in handsome wooden presentation cases. I picked up the Caldecott and immediately flipped it over to see the "four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie." I always liked to show children the Randolph Caldecott illustrations depicted on the medal so it was a real thrill to actually see the reverse side."
