Poetry

I, too, use much poetry in my classes. I begin each of my 25 classes
wearing a 10-pocket apron with a poem title in each pocket. At least
one of the poems has a star or sticker or some unique identifier.
Going alphabetically, each week one student gets a chance at picking a
pocket. If they pick the special pocket, each person in the class gets
a little "treat." (Stickers, hand stamps, book marks, jolly ranchers,
etc.) Even if they don't pick the starred pocket, they get the treat
of a poem. I've been doing this for 3 years now, and it has not lost
its appeal, even all the way up to 8th grade. I've been able to share
some great literary poems, as well as some of the just good fun stuff.
