During the past seven days the CCBC-NET community received two kinds of messages. We've been reading a variety of provocative reflections about and responses to Lois Lowry's books. This is within the scope of what CCBC-NET can offer to its 500+ subscribers. We've also received questions from individuals attempting to complete course requirements who've asked more or less general course-related children's literature questions for anyone "out there." That is really not the focus of CCBC-NET, although there are listservs that welcome that type of question (eg. childlit and kidlit-l). I specifically asked the first person who posed such a question to provide his name and e-mail address so responses could go directly to him, and he kindly did so. We respectfully invite all of the Marian College students to continue participating in CCBC-NET
- by all means
- but to please complete specific assignments using other resources. Allow me a
personal example. I've told the 60 students registered for the undergraduate Children's Literature course I'm currently teaching at UW-Madison that they may not use CCBC-NET to complete a specific course assignment, even though they most certainly have the right to post any message they wish. My students have subscribed to CCBC-NET
- as have many other undergrad and grad students across the nation in order to
learn, "listen," and participate by finding out what is on the collective mind of the CCBC community. Perhaps some of them will become directly engaged in one of our discussions. Perhaps not, but we urge them to complete their specific assignments using other resources. OK, now back to Lois Lowry, if you wish. ..
