Hi everyone.

My name is Renee McGrath and I am enjoying the posts this month. As a matter of fact, I print each one that lists titles so I can refer to them again when needed.

I have just started working at the Lynbrook Public Library here on Long Island and am throughly enjoying my job. I have been a children's librarian for almost four years, but in a very part-time capacity so that I haven't had much experience with storytimes.

When my children were young and I took them to storytime, the librarian there, Maryann Donato often included poetry. Not every session, but often enough. This woman eventually became my friend and mentor. It's because of her that I became a librarian. She's retired now, but I called her up recently for some advice on planning my storytimes. (I am responsible for the preschool storytime and a combined kindergarten and first grade storytime.)

She tells the children that there's a secret number in the library, and its 811! This way they will, hopefully, tell the adult who is with them that they want to find this section after the program. After storytime, where do they go to browse?, the picture book section. Wouldn't it be great if we could get them over to the 811's.

Anyway, I'm going to include poetry in my storytimes, and I'm going to tell them the secret. I can't wait.
