Hi! A quick re-into, since I haven't posted a message for a while -- I am a school librarian in Albany, CA; formerly a library school student at Univ, of Wisc., Madison, and frequenter of the CCBC. Rob Reid mentioned Farmer's A Girl Named Disaster and Napoli's Zel as favorite books for 1996. I too, thought
"Disaster" was a stupendous story for the 10 girl crowd. Exciting, new, and true to perspective. Nhamo, the main character, is one of the most real people I've ever met in a book for kids. "Zel," which I think would be for the same audience, was a fascinating read, but I thought would only reach a very small group of readers. It seemed to be written more for adults (mothers, specifically) than for kids. I say this because I thought the only trully fleshed-out and interesting character was the mother, and that Zel herself remained a story-telling tool. Did anyone else have this impression?
