If you're attending ALA Midwinter, the United States Board on Books for Young People cordially invites you to a program at the midwinter meeting of the American Library Association, Washington D.C., February 14, 1997, 8 p.m.
VOICES FROM NEAR AND FAR: TWO PERSPECTIVES featuring Susan Kuklin and Omar S. Castaneda.
Susan Kuklin is an author and photographer of nonfiction books for children of all ages. Susan Kuklin's books for older readers include FIGHTING BACK: WHAT SOME PEOPLE ARE DOING ABOUT AIDS (Putnam, 1989), and AFTER A SUICIDE: YOUNG PEOPLE SPEAK UP (Putnam, 1994). Her latest book is IRREPRESSIBLE SPIRIT: CONVERSATIONS WITH HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS
(Putnam, 1996).
Omar Castaneda who was born in Guatemala, has drawn upon the traditions of his homeland for his two young adult novels, AMONG THE VOLCANOES,
(Lodestar, 1991) and IMAGINING ISABEL (Lodestar, 1994). His picture book for younger readers also setin Guatemala,is ABUELA'S WEAVE (Lee & Low, 1993).
The program will take place in the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Constitution A. A short business meeting will precede the program. USBBY gratefully acknowledges the support of G.P.Putnam's Publishers, and Lodestar Books, Penguin USA.
The speakers' books wil be available for sale & autographing.
