Last night we held a three-and-a-half hour discussion of twelve of the many books published during 1996 that are eligible for the 1997 Newbery Award. The outcome of our discussion is list below: CCBC Newbery Discussion Winner - Jip: His Story by Katherine Paterson
(Lodestar / Dutton, 1996) CCBC Newbery Discussion Honor Books (a four-way tie) - 1. The Beduins' Gazelle by Frances Temple (Orchard, 1996); 2. The Cuckoo's Child by Suzanne Freeman (Greenwillow, 1996); 3. Grandmother's Pigeon by Louise Erdrich (Hyperion, 1996); and 4. When Birds Could Talk & Bats Could Sing by Virginia Hamilton (Blue Sky Press / Scholastic).
