Megan Scliesman has expressed my thoughts in a most eloquent and delightful way. Thank you Megan. Sometimes I get the feeling that authors that tell a vey good story have really provided us (readers) with only the "icebrg's tip" of what they initally started to tell. I realize that this could lead to quite serendipitous thinking but when there are stories that are not too different it is fun to suppose. The idea of children dealing with overwhelming social forces caught my attention and the "no color" of the The Giver as position with "Ayran might" in "...Stars" is one of those "let's suppose" ideas. I have questioned the students to try place "The Giver" in a relative distance as a "future" story and have some interesting replies. It is a stretch for some, but then I think we can do that now and then. Stuall _at_ aol.com
