The Arlington County Department of Libraries held its annual mock Caldecott/Newbery Award discussion yesterday, and I am posting the results so that you can see what we chose. The books were selected by our children's librarians for the discussion, and we only had time for one vote.

The books discussed for the Newbery Award were THE BALLAD OF LUCY WHIPPLE by Karen Cushman; A GIRL NAMED DISASTER by Nancy Farmer; THE LIFE AND DEATH OF CRAZY HORSE by Russell Freedman; THE CUCKOO'S CHILD by Suzanne Freeman; THE MOORCHILD by Eloise McGraw; JIP: HIS STORY by Katherine Paterson; ORPHAN TRAIN RIDER by Andrea Warren; and BELLE PRATER'S BOY by Ruth White.

The Newbery winner was THE MOORCHILD, and the honor books were THE LIFE AND DEATH OF CRAZY HORSE and BELLE PRATER'S BOY (in that order).

The books discussed for the Caldecott Award were CHATTANOOGA SLUDGE by Molly Bang; GOING HOME by Eve Bunting, illustrations by David Diaz; ELEANOR by Barbara Cooney; LILLY'S PURPLE PLASTIC PURSE by Kevin Henkes; WILMA UNLIMITED: HOW WILMA RUDOLPH BECAME THE WORLD'S FASTEST WOMAN by Kathleen Krull, illustrations by David Diaz; ONE POTATO: A COUNTING BOOK OF POTATO PRINTS by Diana Pomeroy; and GOLEM by David Wisniewski.

The Caldecott winner was LILLY'S PURPLE PLASTIC PURSE, and the honor books were WILMA UNLIMITED and GOLEM (in that order).

Now, of course, we're all anxiously awaiting the decisions of the real committees.
