Number the Stars

I am curious as to whether any effort has been made to have Lois Lowery explain any associations of the story lines between Number the Stars and The Giver. Both seem to dealing with a common thread. I have read The Giver with middle graders and havve "cautioned" by some peers that it could be an unaccaptable story. Number the Stars seems to be an interesting touchstone for The Giver.
