I agree with Beth Wright's comments on Number the Stars--in my opinion, rather than being simplistic it is deceptively simple. The power of Paterson's writing is in the careful choice of every incident, every word. The adult book Closely Watched Trains (also an Chech film) about a young man in Czechoslovakia under Nazi occupation is written in much the same style. These are the kind of books one needs to read more than once to appreciate the writer's skill.
