Megan Schliesman has expressed my thoughts in a very eloquent and delightful way. Thank you Megan. Sometimes I get the feeling that authors that tell a very good story have really provided us with only the "iceberg's tip" of what they meant to tell. I realize that this could lead to so very serendipitous thinking, but when there are books that are not too different it is fun to suppose. The idea of children dealing with overwhelming social forces caught my interest and the "no color" in The Giver as positioned with the Aryan "might" in "..Stars". The idea that The Giver is set in the future is a question I have posed with middle graders. It is interesting to prod a discussion of "how far" in the future the story takes place. It is a bit if a stretch for some,,, but then it doesn't hurt. Thank you for your patience. stuall
