Here are some of the excellent books published during 1996! Last evening area teachers & school library media specialists joined Kathleen Horning, Megan Schliesman and me in the CCBC to discuss some of the books eligible this year for an illustration award within the Coretta Scott King Book Awards process. To be eligible for this annual award, a book must be illustrated by an African-American artist. After a lively and thoughtful three-and-one-half hour discussion, the following books were selected for excellence by the fifteen of us:
"Winner" Minty - illustrated by Jerry Pinkney and written by Alan Schroeder
(Dial, 1996)
"Honor Books" in alphabetical order by title: 1) Bill Pickett: Rodeo-Ridin' Cowboy - illustrated by Brian Pinkney and written by Andrea D. Pinkney (Gulliver Books / Harcourt Brace, 1996); 2) Going Back Home: An Artist Returns to the South - with paintings by Michele Wood and written by Toyomi Igus (Children's Book Press, 1996); 3) The Palm of My Heart: Poetry by African American Children illustrated by Gregory Christie and edited by Davida Adedjouma with an introduction by Lucille Clifton (Lee & Low Books, 1996); and 4) Toussaint L'ouverture: The Fight for Haiti's Freedom - with paintings by Jacob Lawrence and written by Walter Dean Myers (Simon & Schuster).
For general information about these awards and excellent listings (with annotations) of actual past Coretta Scott King Awards winners, consult this reference book: The Coretta Scott King Awards Book: From Vision to Reality edited by Henrietta M. Smith (American Library Association, 1994).
