Here are "favorite books of 1996" selected from nineteen books discussed last evening in the CCBC according to terms, criteria & voting procedures for the Caldecott Award for distinguished illustration. The books that the ten of us especially appreciated following three and a half hours of discussion are:
"Winner" - Goose written and illustrated by Molly Bang (Blue Sky / Scholastic, 1996)
"Honor Books" (in alphabetical order) 1) Grandmother's Pigeon written by Louise Erdrich and illustrated by Jim La Marche (Hyperion, 1996); 2) The Lonely Lioness and the Ostrich Chicks: A Masai Tale retold by Verna Aardema and illustrated by Yumi Heo (Knopf, 1996); 3) Starry Messenger written and illustrated by Peter Sis (Frances Foster Books / Farrar Straus Giroux, 1996); and 4) Wilma Unlimited: How Wilma Rudolph Became the World's Fastest Woman written by Kathleen Krull and illustrated by David Diaz
(Harcourt Brace).
.. For information about upcoming CCBC Awards Discussions, visit the CCBC Web Site (www.soemadison.wisc.edu/ccbc/)... Are any of the above books among your list of favorites? If yes, why? If not, why not? Which other new books do you especially like, and why? Which of the books already mentioned in other CCBC-NET messages this month do you also appreciate? Let's continue to develop a CCBC-NET Community list of excellent books published for children and young adults during 1996. ...Ginny
