Ginny, I cannot help by starting my favorite books of the year list with Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. Kevin Henkes really, really, really, really, really, really, really understands children, what matters to them, their emotions, the big events of their daily lives. Plus he has that teacher down pat. The art and the text are totally integrated you will not get the whole story without "reading" them both. As for novels, I am fascinated by Music of the Dolphins by Karen Hesse which uses different fonts and formats to show changes in voice and raises questions a la the Giver about what is "good" and "right" and who gets to decide.
