My name is JoAnn Belanger. I am the elementary library coordinator for the Antigo School District (2 elementary library media specialists for 11 schools, 1,460 K-6 children). My daughter, a UW?u Claire art ed. student, showed me a beautifully crafted new picture book last weekend called 'Lao Lao of Dragon Mountain' by Margaret Bateson-Hill; illus. by Francesca Pelizzoli; De Agostini Editions. It is a myth about a lady who tells paper cutting stories to children, is abducted by a cruel emperor, and saved by a dragon. The illustrations are outstanding - wonderful fairy tale-surrealistic beauty. At the end are patterns for the paper cut-outs. The story is told in English and beautifully scripted Chinese characters. I hope this book is considered for the Caldecott Award.
