Hello. I'm Cathy Sullivan Seblonka, Youth Services Coordinator at Peter White Public LIbrary in Marquette, MI.
My favorite work of juvenile fiction this year is Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass. It's a work of spellbinding fantasy I couldn't put down. I cannot wait for the next two books in this trilogy. Much of the tale is set in "the deep dark of the arctic night and the clean coldness," a setting which warms my heart and imagination.
One of my favorite picture books of the year is from 1993, although I just received it yesterday. It's Catherine Stock's Where Are You Going Manyoni? It's set in Zimbabwe and has wonderful watercolors of the region and a sweet, simple story. (How's that for two disparate geographies?) I love Patricia Polacco's books and very much enjoyed The Trees of the Dancing Goats (1996). I'm proud she's returned to Michigan. I also love nikki grimes' 1996 book Come Sunday. Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse is still in cataloging & I'm looking forward to treasuring it.
