The Black Heritage series of stamps being issued by the USPS was begun in 1981 with one new issue each year since. Jerry Pinkney was the designer of the first six issues which include: Whitney Moor Young, Jackie Robinson, Scott Joplin, Carter G. Woodson, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Soujourner Truth.
Yes indeed, I have received a few messages. However, I would like to clarify that I don't require responses only from stamp collectors. My goal is to find out more about some of the European literature (authors and illustrators) and locate some of the more obscure fairy tales. I suspect some of what is difficult is actually folklore specific to a country
(Lichtenstein for one).
Researching fairy tales is an entire subject in itself but I have discovered there is so much more! The award winning illustrations from the biennial Bratislava Children's Book Exhibit (at least 10 times) have been issued on Czechoslovakian stamps. With the help of a cyber-friend in Brno, Czechoslovakia, I have most of the authors, illustrators and titles --- but have no other information about the books. And there are many other
'mysteries'.
By the way, Sweden has honored the works of Astrid Lindgren with a set of ten stamps illustrating different titles. And of course Pippi Longstocking appears on stamps of several countries.
Thank you for letting me join you. It is refreshing to read current discussion of the literature. I do miss the reviews, the boxes of new books, and most of all working with the students. The latter is partially taken care of with a couple days of volunteer time in my nearby school.
Regards,
Ellen
