Although I have not had time to contact Neil Baldwin, the administrator of The National Book Awards for complete information, I can furnish some information about the reinstated category of National Book Awards category: Literature for Young People.
Publishers of "youth literature" (that's my term for the purposes of this message) were invited to submit as many nominations as they wished for this award. Many publishing houses divide youth literature publishing (or "juvenile books" - the industry's term) publishing into two units: children's and young adult. Both are considered "literature for young people" for the purposes of the NBA nominations.
Each nomination required an entry fee of $100.
The 1996 jury was chaired by Joyce Carol Thomas. Members of the jury were Lloyd Alexander, Leonard Marcus, Gary Soto, and Beatrice Sparks.
