I have just read Sam and the Tigers and, because of this discussion, looked closely at Jerry Pinkney's illustrations. I noticed that there is a lot more white space on each page of this book and it seems to make the drawings of people and animals more prominent and clearer. I wondered if this was a difference from his other work and looked at John Henry. It is at least different from John Henry--there the paintings (drawings?) fill the entire page, with print within the pages. My favorite illustration in Sam and the Tigers is the tigers chasing tigers picture--when I look at that I really think its is possible for tigers to turn into butter--in other words, Pinkney's drawing reinforces the fantasy and makes it believable to me.
