The novel Brian's Winter was one of the books on the reading list for the May 10th CCBC Book Discussion. For some reason, my notes from that particular book discussion are less detailed and helpful to me than usual. Although you've already observed some of the same things we heard that afternoon, here are some phrases from notes I wrote last spring: 1) skilled descriptions of nature, i.e. trees "exploding" 2) compelling reading 3) readers gain a sense of how the region becomes "home" 4) readers see how Brian learns things (most of the time) 5) do we have any idea why he's there? (I assume this comment related to a question: will young readers unfamiliar with Hatchet know what's going on? - as if there are many young readers who, at this point, have not read Hatchet. Hmmm... how about that?) 6) is it credible, period? Do you agree? Disagree? Other comments? ... Ginny
