For a number of reasons, our discussion of The Cuckoo's Child and the formerly announced discussion of Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen will continue and/or take place between now and October 13. Please continue with comments about The Cuckoo's Child and at the same time, feel free to comment on Brian's Winter, as previously announced for September.
Yes, we will discuss books illustrated by Jerry Pinkney beginning October 13. This will give anyone attending the Marquette University Children's Literature conference at which Mr. Pinkney will speak on Oct. 11 a chance to contribute based on what they hear there about his books. This will also give anyone who coming to the UW-Madison campus and the CCBC a chance to see Kathleen Horning's outstanding CCBC exhibit featuring editions of the "Little Black Sambo" story; her exhibit is titled "Re-Vision - From Degradation to Dignity."
We'll begin that discussion by talking about Sam and the Tigers retold by Julius Lester and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney. (Yes, I know, I know. We announced that we'd begin with books other than the 1996 books, but since you have an extra few days, you'll probably be able to locate Minty & Sam and the Tigers in time.)
You might want to go back to CCBC-NET on 9/6/96, when Rob Reid wrote a message about the Sept. 9th Time Magazine article about Sam... and ...Little Babajii.
You might also want to re-read the CCBC-NET message sent on 9/7/96 about the "Little Black Sambo" story. Chris Dowling just reminded everyone how to gain access to past messages, such as these.
In addition to Sam and the Tigers, other books illustrated by Jerry Pinkney to be emphasized later in October will be: Minty, Pretend You're a Cat, Half a Moon and One Whole Star, Home Place, The Patchwork Quilt, and Back Home.
OK, now, where are those comments about The Cuckoo's Child and/or Brian's Winter... Several of you have told us you still have things to say. Here we go... Sincerely, Ginny Moore Kruse
