Hatchet and Brian's Winter seem unbelievable taken as a series of events happening so close together, but Paulsen says he or someone he knew actually experienced those individual events (or similiar ones) at some point in his life. My husband greatly enjoyed the books. In his adolescent years, he had a secret ambition to be dropped into a wilderness naked with only a knife and try his skills in survival. These books speak to that secret ambition to prove oneself and assert ones independence without relying on adults for survival. Brian experiences one rite of passage after another--not as a super hero, but as a human being who makes DUMB, DUMB mistakes but learns from those mistakes and works out the solutions to his problems drawing his own ingenuity. I say they are great adventure books full of page turning action and satisfying conclusions.
