Some responses to the August request for titles and subsequent answers have provoked me into adding my two cents. A recent writer "appreciated the concentration on a true discussion of children's literature", and didn't want CCBC-NET to be "dedicated to lists of titles". When a teacher or librarian responds to a request for titles, with books that have worked with her population, with illustrative comments, is that any less a true discussion than comments about the "official" topic for the month? Are the responses to books for preschoolers of greater intellectual content than the responses to books for 5-6th graders because the former discussion was proposed by an
"official" of CCBC-Net and the latter by "just" a member? In looking back over the "rules" sent me by the CCBC when I joined, I do not see the latter is excluded. Personally, I have enjoyed the August responses for preschool & preteen books equally. In the year I have been part of the CCBC-NET I have not been overwhelmed with uninteresting messages, (except for the recent list serve snafu, which became as funny as it was interesting)! In this unofficial Gallup poll that seems to have taken on an email life of its own, I say let's keep speaking of books.....period.
