Mama Bear by Chyng Feng Sun, illus. by Lolly Robinson is a title I have used with 6-7 year olds.
This gentle tale carries the message that -- not quite reaching a goal and reseting it can also be rewarding. The single parent on a limited income is treated without condescension or sentimentality. It is just simply the environment of the tale.
The book blurb states that this is her first book for children. Since 1994 when it was published, I have kept an eye out for more. So far I haven't seen another by this author.
