Katy, your invitation to discuss new picture books and trends in picture books leads me to recommend that ccbc-net readers take a look at Wave Goodbye (Lee & Low, 1996), by Rob Reid, an Eau Claire favorite librarian and storyteller! This activity rhyme (which Rob uses so successfully as part of story time at the library also) is accompanied by clean, simple illustrations that young children find very appealing. Illustrator Lorraine Williams' family is probably Hispanic, but the multicultural illustrations are not the emphasis. The idea of hello's and goodbye's are part of every culture, and of every child's day, and what all young children understand.

Toddlers and preschoolers will love this book and readily imitate the words and activities. (I already kid-tested it with my grandchildren, both of whom were delighted with it, especially the part about "wave your derrierre"!)

The most significant trend I'd like to comment on is the multitude of multicultural picture books that are now available, compared to five or ten years ago. For that trend, I give praise and thanks to CCBC for teaching publishers, authors, and illustrators, and the rest of us the importance of connecting with images of people who do not look exactly like ourselves! Years ago, when I'd suggest picture books with non-white images (and there weren't many!) to the teachers at my school, they were very reluctant to use them in their almost all-white classrooms. With many more books reflecting the many cultures of our country and of the world, we now see librarians and teachers, as well as parents, looking for these titles. Thanks, CCBC!
