Read alouds for 5/6 grades Look at CLASS PRESIDENT by j. Hurwitz, Morrow,199? but available in paper. SOME OF THE KINDER PLANETS by Wynne-Jones, a Canadian writer of these 9 short stories interconnected. Pub by Orchard,1995. The work of Cynthia Rylant, especially THE VAN GOGH CAFE set in Kansass and published last year (95). The work of Gary Paulsen, espacially POPCORN DAYS AND BUTTERMILK NIGHTS
, Puffin Paper, THE MONUMENT pub by Delacourrte, THE COOKCAMP published by Orchard or HATCHET, pub. by Bradbury and in paper. I know you will want to look at these ahead of time to see which would really suit your students but I've found them to be not as relentlessly urban as some of the newer books. I think I probably learned about them via CCBC Choices, so you may find a short summary of the plot if you have access to it.
