Recent discussion of Vera Williams' books, particularly "More, More, More Said the Baby," made me think of a very dissimilar book that is also perfect for pre-K children: Yumi Heo's "One Afternoon." If Vera Williams' "More, More, More" focuses on the love and security that toddlers crave, Heo's "One Afternoon" is about the deliciousness of discovery that every 3- and 4-year-old thrives on. Heo's description of young Minho's day running errands in his city neighborhood with his mother is delightful, focusing on the sights and sounds a young child would notice and adore, from a fire engine on the street to the laundry in the washing machine to the cash register at the grocery. Her use of onomatopaiec sounds as part of the illustrations invites children to participate wholeheartedly in the story's telling.

"One Afternoon" is a book that Yumi Heo both wrote and illustrated.
"Father's Rubber Shoe's" is another. In addition, she has been the illustrator for a number of other books, including "Rabitt's Escape" and Rabbit's Judgment," two Korean folktales retold by Suzanne Crowder Han. I find her perspectives as an illustrator fresh, original, witty and inviting. She is another author/illustrator who offers children intelligent, appealing illustrations (and stories) that are anything but sweet. (Likewise, I greatly admire Vera Williams for her abililty to focus on very real emotions in a warm, comforting, but never sweet style in either words or illustrations.)

Any other Yumi Heo fans out there? Who else do you admire?
