Barbara Park's book - Mick Harte was here is I would think very current. It is told from the view of the sister of a boy who was killed riding a bicycle not wearing a helmet. Even though it seems like a bummer, it is a most powerful and at times very humorous book. All the 5th grade teachers in my district (suburban) said kids were hooked.Also Gary Paulsen - Hatchet, Mr Tuckett are excellent. Weasel by Cynthia DeFelice is a grabber also.
