Harriet and New York

Another aspect of "Harriet the Spy" that I recall from reading it as a child was the "character" of New York City. Just as Eloise depicted NYC and the Plaza, Harriet depicts NYC with its eggcreams, parks, nosy neighbors, etc.
It is fascinating to me because as an adult, I think of NYC as a place almost devoid of children, but as a young reader, Harriet was one of the books that compelled me to want to visit NYC. Even though I was fairly popular in school with both kids and teachers, I totally identified with Harriet, but also with her friend Janie. Not because I was a science whiz, but because of Janie's attitude that parents and teachers don't know everything. I liked Janie almost as much as I liked Harriet! Hope to see many of you in NYC where we can discuss Harriet over an eggcream!
