I read HARRIET THE SPY in the summer before entering 7th grade, and I re-read it last summer! At age 11 and 12, it was my favorite book. I read it several times during junior high school. For our first English assignment in 7th grade, we had to write a book report, so of course I wrote it on HARRIET.
My teacher gave me the grade of "B" saying it was an excellent report, but because Harriet is 11, that meant it was a book for the sixth grade level, not a 7th grade book. Knowing what I know now, it is obviously a book for a broad age range; in fact, older kids may understand it better! One note regarding the movie: When Rosie O'Donnell was cast as Ole Golly, one columnist in Entertainment Weekly magazine mentioned that the choice was an odd one, because "Ole Golly is black in the book." I never saw her as any particular ethnicity. Am I wrong?
