YES-that's it exactly! I reread the book this summer and was very confused because my memory didn't say she was black nor did it upon rereading. I LOVED that book as a child. Being an outsider was something I felt I was and I think the ideas of spying and writing your secrets in a notebook is a natural activity for children!
