Wow, I've been reading for a while now, but this is my first message. I also read Harriet the Spy as a child. While reading everyone else's comments I find it interesting and perplexing that overall the book doesn't stand out in my memory as being great or poor. I know I thought it was reasonably good and didn't have any objections to reading it, but I don't remember it making an impact. I find this a bit odd because it seems I should have related strongly to her character. I'm becoming very curious to reread it and figure out what I missed as a child. Is there anyone else who responded this way, or was I just that strange child that did everything a bit backwards?
I also wanted to add my Here! Here! to the comment about new and tacky book covers. I am most displeased with both the new covers of Harriet and James and the Giant Peach. I think the cover of Harriet smacks of the cheap formula-written low-quality series books; and it's a terrible shame that Disney felt they needed to replace the light illustrations of a world-class artist with the dark, muddied, inappropriate tones now used for James.
