I am enthusiastic about this book. I thought the building of the characters and especially the setting was most effective. Of course, reminiscent of Chaucer. Before I read it, I knew little of this pilgrimage. Now, every time I hear or read something about Santiago de Compostella, I am interested. The book seems to live on as if it was a true story of someone I knew. I did think the side philosophical bit with the shepherd was tacked on (hope my memory is accurate) and detracted from the movement of the story - a little like the Pan chapter in Wind in the Willows. But the vividness of climbing up those steps on your knees and life on the trail live on. Melody Allen (melodyan at dsl.rhilinet.gov)
