I am enthusiastic about this book. I thought the building of the characters and especially the setting was most effective. Of course, reminiscent of Chaucer. Before I read it, I knew little of this pilgrimage. Now, every time I hear or read something about Santiago de Compostella, I am interested. The book seems to live on as if it was a true story of someone I knew. I did think the side philosophical bit with the shepherd was tacked on (hope my memory is accurate) and detracted from the movement of the story - a little like the Pan chapter in Wind in the Willows.
