Just a thought about one of the many strengths of Temple: The diction of her characters makes them, and time and place settings, come alive. What's interesting about this is that she catches the diction, (i.e., the way people sound in our mental ears when we read) of several cultures: Haiti, Central America, the desert. So, it is not just the drama of situations, but also her characterizations. Diction is not often so strongly developed. Temple's verb choice is also strong.
