As my first comment to the list, I'd like to add a rather small, tangential comment to the wonderful titles and cogent reviews offered by so many of you.
Earlier this year I was looking for the Tobias Wolff memoir, "This Boy's Life," but did not find it in the children's section. The wonderful librarian who helped me locate it noted that when she was first starting out in children's literature, one of her mentors observed that when men write coming of age stories they're published as adult books; when women write them, they're published as children's.
