For a lot of readers, biography falls into the same category as fairy/folk tales, with larger than life characters with larger than life accomplishments. They provide a very satisfactory sense of possibilities. In our house, the last chapter of BULLY FOR YOU, TEDDY ROOSEVELT by Jean Fritz went unread, because my daughter didn't want him to die! As a child, I loved biographies, because it was one place where I could often find strong women characters who did something IMPORTANT! I love Russel Freedman's books also, because he does a wonderful job of not glossing over imperfections, but not beating the reader over the head with them either.
